Boston’s oldest remaining firehouse, the Italianate building originally known as Torrent Six, was built in 1859 for the City of Roxbury and housed a pumper that was pulled by firefighters. When Roxbury was annexed to Boston in 1868, Ladder Company 4 was located here and the following year a new pumper pulled by horses was obtained. This prompted construction of a wood frame addition as a stable for the horses and to house the new equipment. Lost in the 1980s, the rear ell was rebuilt on the footprint of the earlier structure as part of the complete rehabilitation of the Eustis Street Firehouse, which now serves as offices for Historic Boston, Inc.
