With factory buildings dating back to the 1820s, the Newmarket Mills complex is a well-preserved example of a New England textile factory based on the Waltham model. While the Newmarket Manufacturing Company followed a well-known operational model, the management structure was unique in that the company was run by Salem-based investors rather than the usual Boston entrepreneurs. The Newmarket complex is also notable for its distinctive stone mill buildings, which set it apart from the more traditional brick factories found throughout New England. Federal funding associated with a certified rehabilitation project to renovate six of the mill buildings resulted in Section 106 review by the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources.
