Fort McKinley
Portland, Maine
Fort McKinley was the largest of five military complexes constructed in Portland Harbor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The fort protected Maine’s principal city in one of the most well-defended harbors in the country. Among the 70 structures built at Fort McKinley between 1891 and 1943 were roughly three dozen tactical buildings, including mining casements, batteries, observation stations, telephone switchboard buildings, and storehouses. As part of an ongoing revitalization project, many of the principal buildings at the former fort have been restored for private residential use. Nine of the tactical buildings were in very poor condition and slated for demolition. As a way to mitigate any adverse effect due to the loss of the buildings, the State Historic Preservation Office stipulated that HABS documentation be prepared for the buildings that were to be removed.
