Constructed in 1862, the North Berwick Woolen Mill is the only major historic manufacturing complex in the Berwick area. Its distinctive bell tower is one of the more highly articulated among Maine mills. Early success of the mill was the result of a lucrative contract to produce wool blankets for the Union Army. The woolen mill continued to operate into the 1950s, after which it was used for smaller scale manufacturing. The complex was recently rehabilitated using federal historic tax credits to create 40 affordable housing units and one commercial space overlooking the river.
